Cocoa prices will continue to rise under the influence of increased demand, especially in countries with growing economies, due to reduced production and speculation to which will inevitably come in newly created circumstances.

In fact, a large number of farmers in West Africa moved from growing cocoa to production of rubber and palm oil.

In addition, the production of cocoa has also fallen across Venezuela, which once produced half of the world's supply of this crop. Today, Ivory Coast and Ghana provide more than half of the world production of this culture, required for making chocolate.

Last year, Venezuela produced 14,000 tons of cocoa -- the least amount produced in the last 50 years, as farming collapses in the economy dominated by oil. The country, which has the largest oil reserves in the world, imports 70 percent of the food for its population.

Chocolate manufacturers still rate Venezuelan cocoa as one of the best in the world, especially the criollo variety. It seems that the government of Venezuela misses a golden opportunity to cash in world's increasing appetite for chocolate.

According to analysts, situation will not be changed in the coming years. Demand will continue to grow and the manufacturers will not be able to meet those needs, which will further stir up the growth rate of this crop.

The largest chocolate manufacturers, such as Swiss companies Barry Callebaut and Nestle have already responded, joining the initiative "Cocoa Action", launched in mid-May this year by an international foundation "Cocoa".

Twelve different associations from around the world that support the production of cocoa and chocolate were engaged in efforts to stimulate 300.000 growers of this crop in Ghana and the Ivory Coast to double production until 2020.

It is not clear whether this initiative will bear fruit, but what is certain is that prices will continue to rise, with the risk that chocolate could become a luxury good.
