A warning came from the F.B.I. considering scammers who try to advertise fake antibody tests for Covid-19. They use this method of scam in order to obtain personal information about someone and steal people’s identity for theft or medical insurance fraud. The F.B.I. came out with this warning on Friday, it was the latest alert issued by the federal government about fraudulent exploitation of the Covid-19 global situation.

Scammers are trying to advertise unapproved and fake Covid-19 tests online – which leads to false results. This scam is going on social media or through email, over the phone, or in person, the F.B.I. stated. Scammers often claim that their tests were approved by the FDA but that is not true. They also advertise free Coronavirus antibody tests or they offer testing services, this is also a scam.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation advises anyone who wants to get tested to visit the site of the Food and Drug Administration and see there what companies are approved to make tests by the FDA. These tests were approved by the National Institutes of Health or by another FDA-licensed company.

People should also talk to their general practitioner and ask for advice before taking any Corona antibody test at home, the Federal Bureau of Investigation stated. F.B.I. also warned about sharing health and personal information with those who are suspicious or if you don’t know them; you should only trust certified medical professionals. Also, never forget to check your medical bills for any unusual claims and do not hesitate to report such cases immediately.

Another method scammers use to steal crucial personal information is calling individuals and telling them that they work for the government or that they are licensed by the government to take the Covid-19 antibody test. Sometimes they even perform the test for cash.

The main purpose of these scams is to seek personal information, name, date of birth, Social Security number, health insurance information, Medicare info. This can be used for insurance fraud or identity theft. Government officials say that these scammers just want to make money on people’s fear during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Scammers sometimes present themselves as contact tracers. At the beginning of June, the Internal Revenue Service alerted all institutions and people on the issue of false government incentives during the epidemic.

During the previous months, many investigations have been conducted by several government agencies and during them, it was discovered that there are at least 100 different scams on the internet in order to obtain personal data of individuals. The Federal Bureau of Investigation continues to work with other government agencies as well as with the governments of other countries to stop criminal activities and scammers that abuse the situation with the virus.

Criminals and scammers use this catastrophic situation with the virus to make a profit and that is what creates the most anger in this situation, The Federal Bureau of Investigation officials explained. The main priority for the F.B.I. is to pursue all these frauds and arrest all responsible for COVID-19 related scams.
